Wintersession Web Design

|
I taught one section of a six-week semester known as Wintersession, which consisted of 13 five-hour classes held twice a week. I developed a curriculum that included basic html and css, and a brief overview of javascript. I walked the students through setting up a domain name and hosting so that they could self-sufficiently create new web projects outside of my class. Attention was paid to learning about the web design process, as well as issues relating to web standards and accessibility.

TA: Type III

|
Professor: Doug Scott

Type III is the final typography class that undergraduates take before graduating. It consists of an overview of basic typographic vocabulary, and quickly moves into three concurrent projects that work students through hierarchy, structure, typographic systems, and book design. Because of the varying nature of each project, it also becomes an opportunity to teach about practical production issues such as color calibration, bookbinding, and paper choice.

My duties as a Teaching Assistant were to be an active, supportive member of each studio session, and to meet with students individually outside of class in the event that they needed additional critique or had missed a class. I also answered questions and gave critiques via email. At the end of the semester I had input in determining grades for all of my students.

TA: Form + Communication

|
Professor: Suzi Cozzens

Form + Communication is a core member of the undergraduate Graphic Design curriculum, and all sophomores must take it concurrently with Typography I. As a result, the class is intended to utilize and develop form and form-making skills without any use of type. Class exercises dealt with research, observation, abstraction, representation, and narrative. A second half of this six-credit course was a rotating seminar where students spent three weeks at a time with a different professor, focusing on issues of photography, hierarchy, letterpress printing, and bookmaking.

My responsibilities as a TA were to be an active and engaged member of each studio class, offering constructive critique and production advice. For the short-term seminars, I helped with the logistics of collecting work and delivering assignments to the various F+C sections.

[recent news] inspired type face

This summer I was lucky enough to spend a week in the mountains of North Carolina, in a little slice of heaven known as Montreat College near Asheville. One of my favorite structures on campus is the stone bridge at the entrance, and I am in the process of creating a type face inspired by the lettering incorporated into the stonework.
